Partnership & Collaboration
LUMINA exists because multiple organizations decided that measuring light pollution properly was worth doing. We're scientists, engineers, astronomers, and educators working together to build something none of us could manage alone.
Our affiliates provide infrastructure, expertise, data systems, and credibility. They contribute research facilities, technical knowledge, and access to communities who care about dark skies. In return, they get access to data, collaborative research opportunities, and the satisfaction of contributing to something genuinely useful.
It's the sort of partnership that works because everyone involved believes the science matters and is willing to contribute their bit to make it happen.

Sherwood Observatory is a community-run astronomical facility located near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Established by dedicated volunteers, the observatory has been serving the astronomical community and the public for decades, providing access to quality telescopes and fostering a passion for observing the night sky.
As a research partner, Sherwood Observatory provides LUMINA with essential infrastructure, expertise in observational astronomy, and access to a community of experienced volunteers. The collaboration allows LUMINA to deploy monitoring equipment at a site with excellent dark sky conditions and established astronomical credibility.
The observatory's commitment to education and public outreach aligns perfectly with LUMINA's mission. Together, we work to demonstrate the importance of dark skies not just for astronomy, but for the wider environment and future generations.
