Guiding Principles
A clear statement of intent for LUMINA. Our guiding principles define how we work, collaboration, and act.
Project HubOur Approach to Science and Sustainability
We are a UK-based, science-first national capability measuring light pollution and sky quality through ground sensors and planned CubeSat missions. These principles guide how we collect, interpret, and share data; seek to engage in discussion and collaboration with interested parties and help build practical policies.
Science First
We exist to measure, observe, and understand. Evidence, accuracy, and reproducibility come before interpretation or advocacy.
Measurement Over Assumption
Decisions and insights are grounded in data collected through transparent, well-documented methods. Uncertainty is stated and claims are bounded by what the measurements support.
Data Stewardship
We share data in ways that preserve context and protect contributors, balancing openness with scientific care. Our approach is guided by public benefit and long-term trust.
Read data stewardshipClarity Without Simplification
Complex topics are explained clearly without being oversimplified. We respect the audience's ability to engage with nuance.
National Perspective, Local Relevance
We operate at national scale while recognising that light pollution is experienced locally. Local measurements and context inform the national picture.
Educational Value
Participation supports curiosity and scientific literacy, particularly for students and schools. We design access to be meaningful without requiring specialist expertise.
Responsible Interpretation
Data is contextualised carefully; correlation is not presented as causation. Limitations and assumptions are stated openly.
Long-Term Continuity
LUMINA is designed for sustained observation over time with consistent calibration. Trends matter more than snapshots.
Collaboration Over Ownership
We work alongside existing research, policy, and community efforts. Credit, attribution, and collaboration are fundamental to our practice.
Measured Tone and Integrity
Our communications are calm, precise, and proportionate. We avoid alarmism, exaggeration, and unsupported conclusions.
